MathAMATYC Educator

The MathAMATYC Educator is a peer-reviewed publication of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), with three issues each year since 2009. The journal is focused on teaching and learning in the first two years of college mathematics. AMATYC members have print and digital access to the journal content.  The journal has been indexed through EBSCO since 2017. A new initiative (approved by the Executive Board at the Fall Board Meeting 2023) is underway to begin assigning DOI numbers to future articles for ease of referencing. There have been two special themed editions of the MathAMATYC Educator in recent years.

Volume 10(3) Spring 2019 had a focus on IMPACT (Improving Mathematical Prowess and College Teaching).

Cover of MathAMATYC Educator Volume 11 (3) Spring 2020.
Volume 11(3) Spring 2020 was a special edition on Research at the Two-Year College Level.

The position of Journal Assistant Editor was established during the Spring Board Meeting 2017 with the Executive Board approving conference support for this leadership role at the Spring Board Meeting 2018.

Changes made at the Fall Board Meeting 2018 resulted in AMATYC no longer contracting for professional editing service on the MathAMATYC Educator. The Editorial staff determined that typesetting the mathematical formulas and symbols internally avoided the loss of mathematical formatting when drafts were transferred between file types with professional editors. In addition, issue labels were changed from the months of September, February, and May, to the seasonal labels of Fall, Winter, and Spring, respectively. The approximate publication date of the Winter issue was moved to January 15.

The purchase of mathematical typesetting software for the use of the Editorial staff was approved at the Fall Board Meeting 2021.

To be more cost effective, the publication of the MathAMATYC Educator was moved in-house as of the Summer Conference Call (SCC) 2023. At this time the position title of Journal Assistant Editor was changed to Journal Review Editor to more accurately convey the role of this position.

AMATYC News

The AMATYC News was changed at the Spring Board Meeting 2016 to seasonal editions: Winter (February), Spring (April), Summer (August), and Fall (October). This publication continues to be an avenue to disseminate information to our members. Follow this link to view editions of the AMATYC News.

Standards

AMATYC has created and maintains standards to guide the teaching of mathematics in the first two years at any college or university. The most recent standards were updated in 2023, and include standards for content, intellectual development, and pedagogy.

In November 2018, AMATYC published IMPACT: Improving Mathematical Prowess And College Teaching. This publication aims to support instructors in the teaching of mathematics and emerging research on the topic of mathematics education in the first two years of college. In the years since, AMATYC has maintained a Committee on Mathematics Standards in the First Two Years of College to ensure up-to-date recommendations.

To support IMPACT, myAMATYC (my.amatyc.org) was launched in June 2020. This collaborative website includes a community dedicated to keeping the document alive, and is overseen by the Online Community Coordinator.
