On the occasion of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges’ (AMATYC’s) 50th Anniversary, we pause to look at the last ten years of changes in AMATYC. Throughout the years other histories have been written that cover the first 40 years of AMATYC. Follow this link to previous histories.
It has been about 10 years since AMATYC has pulled together information about changes in the organization. This history reflects the changes from 2014 through 2023. It also includes some corrections to past histories.
AMATYC – The Big Picture
AMATYC is an educational association that strives “to be the leading voice and resource for excellence and inclusion in the first two years of mathematics in colleges and universities (Vision revised 2023).” Its success lies on the shoulders of its many volunteers and its office team.
Over 300 volunteers oversee the many facets of AMATYC:
- Student competitions are developed and run by a cadre of math educators.
- Publications require submitters, reviewers, typesetters, and editors.
- Committees and ANets work to address the many issues facing educators today and provide support to AMATYC members.
- Professional development includes the conference and offerings all year long, each of which is coordinated and run by dedicated members.
- The Investments Board and Foundation keep AMATYC’s assets strong and see that there are funds to support AMATYC initiatives.
- The Executive Board and the Delegate Assembly keep AMATYC moving forward.
AMATYC is headquartered in Memphis, TN, where the core of AMATYC’s Office team has remained consistent for 25 years. This has provided stability to the organization while the cadre of volunteers has changed. The Executive Director oversees the AMATYC Office and works with the Board to steer the organization.
